All this technology is making us antisocial.
I thank Wisewebwoman for this timely reminder that old codgers like me should not really be complaining about modern telephony.
Now that WWW has nudged me, I remember those days too.

At least they’re quiet and not bothering their neighbors.

And, I remember that it was an art not touching the neighbour while unfolding and folding the papers.
Now if any of them read aloud it would be annoying !
Yes. On the Bombay suburban trains, when I used to attempt the crossword puzzles, there would be quite a few enquirers for solutions to difficult clues! But those were typical Bombaiyyas not the London tube types.
I remember this…. the papers were so huge everyone used to get in everyone else’s way! Great reminder, I feel better now 🙂 Thanks

It was an art form not touching the neighbour while folding and unfolding the papers.
Interesting, the only ‘book’ visible is in the hands of a woman!
And it took a sharp eyed woman to locate that one anomaly.
I guess reading the paper is the equivalent of texting or reading on a phone/iPad/ I don’t mind that sort of antisocialness – it’s peaceful!

Yes, it is when the modern gadgets are used to talk to people that it disturbs,
That pic also reminds me that the British have never been keen on talking to other passengers. Far too adventurous. Burying their heads in a newspaper enabled them to keep happily to themselves.
I suppose that it was also a good way to pass the time till the destination was reached.
Another interesting way to pass time on trains in UK is to observe shoes and its fun!
And men have other things to look at Ray!
I remember this also, Rummy. It was a familiar sight when I was young.

You and I are of the same vintage!
You know when I lived in the UK, I have no idea what people did on the train, let alone what I did…
When I did work in NZ, I drove a car to my place of work, sometimes picking someone else up but I certainly never looked at a newspaper…
I would lucky if ex-DH actually bought the paper home from work…
Now I read online newspapers…in the privacy of my home 🙂
