I recently wanted to consult an optometrist in my neighbourhood and sent the following message to him on his WhatsApp page.
“Hari Om. Namaste.
This is R. Rajgopaul, Ranjan’s father.
Please call me when convenient tomorrow morning. Thank you.

There was a time when my son Ranjan had to introduce himself as my son but, now the tables are turned and I have to introduce myself as his father.
I remember the first time this happened to me and it was such a jolt. And the first time someone asked me if I was Brilliant Grandgirl’s Grandma. Wow, we are ancient.

What comes to mind everytime that this happens to me and, it does often, that like the old Western movies, it is time for me to quietly ride into the sunset.

yes interesting when the “tables are turned” – I don’t have that issue but when (not recently, not much contact) I would go to sports days with my niece, people would get a funny look when they couldn’t work out that I wasn’t quite as old as her Mother, my sister. 2020 and there is still a 25 year gap between us!

I seem to have been introducing myself as the mother of my children for a very long time! Somebody recently thought I was Caitlins grandmother!
I have been called a grandfather from when I was 47 years old by friends’ grandchildren who are now in the mid thirties who still do.
And now Madhura and Uttara’s grandma!
