Flipkart Has Flipped.

The following exchange of mail should at least amuse if not annoy you. The story starts in August of last year when I placed an order for a DVD on Flipkart. I have been sending mails to them every month and I more or less get the same message over and over again and I was really getting cheesed off that they were not taking the initiative to keep me informed but were only reacting when I followed up. Let us start from end February where one joker did not even know what product I was referring to despite the description staring at him on the letter itself!

Dear Mr. Patnaik,

I am 71 years old, possibly as old as your grand father, and there are very few people in my life who call me by my first name Ramana. I am disgusted with your casual approach to addressing one of your customers by his first name without knowing anything about him. Neither you nor I are Americans and this is totally unacceptable behaviour in our land.

You are “glad” to inform me that there is going to be further delay? What kind of emotion is that? Your customer has been waiting to get his order fulfilled for over eight months and every month he has to approach you to find out the latest position without your taking any initiative to assuage his dismay and you are glad? What kind of response is that?

I understand that the release date is decided by the producers of the film but surely you do not fulfill your commitment every month and I have to approach you every month and you assure me that you will let me know when it is finally despatched.

This is not customer service. If you see my record with you, you will find that I was one of your earliest customers and was buying regularly every month some thing or the other till your service and prices hit a sixer. I have stopped buying from you and I would like to cancel this order too and look forward to your refunding the amount with you for the past eight months.

Please confirm that this will be done at the earliest.

Thank you.

RAMANA RAJGOPAUL

I am still thinking about how to respond to this message. What would you do if you were me? Cancel the order or play it out for some more comedy?

  1. Play it out for more comedy, unless you can get it somewhere else. It took me over two years once to get my insurance company to pay a bill. They had been paid and I was due a refund, but they had lost the check and I had to go through all sorts of red tape to get it straightened out. It was for $248, and I told Andy I clearly didn’t value my time very highly. I sometimes have more stubbornness than good sense.

    1. How funny, Jean. We were obviously writing at the same time. Read your comment a minute after I’d posted mine. Keywords “refund” and “fun”. I too can be like a dog with a bone, but rarely am. Certain things bore me, and I do value my time (particularly the one I am not being paid for) more than some endless kerfuffle.

  2. Oh dear, Ramana. It’s one of those stories I am torn between laughing in recognition of your pain or crying because I have been there myself.

Yes, customer services. Sigh. My great mission in life is to actually get hold of a real life person on the phone instead of being put on a perpetual loop of meaningless missives.

What would I do? Depends. If you were happy with their service before I’d probably just ride it out. Presumably you have already paid for the DVD – wait till you ask for a refund. That’s when the real fun will start. Yes, Ramana, I know, I am great comfort to those in despair. Just forget about it. In two years time you will be pleasantly surprised at that little parcel in the post.

On the other hand I might send a truly sarcastic letter addressed to the manager/director of the outfit. One trick which works wonders if you hint that you work in customer satisfaction research. Results of which will be published. Boy oh boy, that usually results in swift resolution of a problem.

Other than that:: For all your troubles they should offer you a ‘freebie’.

    Good luck,

    1. Freebie? I will be thankful to them if they simply supply what they have promised to supply and close the chapter. They are being bought over by another big online retailer who may be a better option in the future.

  3. This is hilarious Ramanaji. Play it out just to see how much more ridiculous this can get. Just tweeted about it. By the way, Rang de Basanti DVD released on 15 March 2006 and Blu-ray released on 5 Sept 2013.

  4. I never expected this… I am going to tweet this link to Flipkart twitter handle.

I think they should give it for free now. Hope they are publishing a book for you on the Movie which you want to buy. Had I know this I would have given/gifted that for you from local market.

Now I think you wont mind if I say “Take care” to Flipkart 😉
