This is from a 1992 concert that never made the air waves….,
John Denver singing a parody of “16 Tonsβ called “18 Holes.” It has never been released.
This should be all golfers’ theme song.
When you see me tee up, you’d better step aside
A lot of men didn’t, a lotta men died
I hook it to the left, I shank it to the right
I’ll be looking for my ball until the dark of the night
You play eighteen holes, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Andrew don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the country club pro
If I could keep it in the fairway, I’d be a happy man
I’m usually in the water, the rough or the sand
I pitch it to the green, thinking now I’m gonna score
But everybody ducks when my caddie yells, βFour!β
Eighteen holes, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Andrew don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the country club pro
Ocean side, sunny side, Tucson in the rain
Golf is my life, but it sure is a pain
I leave my wife and my kids ’cause I hear the call
Walking around a cursing at a little white ball
You play eighteen holes, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Andrew don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the country club pro
Well, you may not believe it, ’cause this is how things are
I started out a bum, I ended up a star
My caddie’s in the shack, my partner’s in the bar
I shot eighteen holes in one under par
You play eighteen holes, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Andrew don’t you call me, ’cause I can’t go
I owe my soul to the country club pro
Yeah!
Thanks Shankar.

I was fortunate to see him in concert in 1978. Amazing perfomer. He did a full 3 hour show without taking a break.

I have not had the pleasure of seeing him in a live performance but did enjoy his music.
not a golfer – it could be applied to a number of “hobbies” with a few little tweaks here and there…:-)
Yes, indeed. But, Denver has shown us the way!
he was such a sweetheart.
tragic that he died so young.
i also liked the movie he made called God. it was wonderful.
if you get a chance to see it (if you haven’t) i think you would like it.
this was wonderful!
thank you rummy AND shankar!
No, I have not seen the movie and will try and get a DVD. Thank you for the pointer.
I have ruined many a walk in the country by taking a little white ball and a bag of sticks with me. … π

Sticks? That is sacrilege there Big John!
Brilliant words! I loved John Denver, and listen to his songs whenever I can. His soaring voice resonates with me still.

I like his songs too. In this he has been really creative. I understand that he wrote his songs himself.
It was good one… another day older and deeper in debt. Reminds me of the capitalism “which fails”. Not that I am against capitalism π
Anything can fail and anything can succeed.
