India, My Beloved India!

Mera_Bharat_Mahan

Just about every visitor to India has said that India is a land of contrasts and most of them do not stop with that and go on to use many other adjectives.

For the purpose of this post, I shall restrain myself to the one about it being a land of contrasts.

The Hindu, one of India’s oldest newspapers has these two article in the same issue.

Child Marriage Still Rampant.

Muslim Girls Can Marry At Fifteen.

Do I need to elaborate? If I do, I will promptly be called a Hindu fundamentalist with anti Muslim biases. So, I leave my readers to come to their own conclusions.

  1. In general your countries attitudes towards women seem somewhat lacking. Of course we only hear about the rapes and violence perpetrated against women. The contrasts between the old ways and the modern society are particularly sharp from what I can see and it is something we go through here as well but the differences are much more pronounced in your country. Of course there are so many different cultural norms in India it is often amazing the country stays united. India is the most fascinating place on the planet.

    1. It is in the process of very rapid urbanisation and that is the problem. You have rural semi literate men steeped in the old ways moving to cities and seeing liberated women in high paying jobs and it bugs the hell out of them. Many of our problems stem from this and in this these men are also supported by their women coming from similar patriarchal systems of life. I agree. It is a fascinating country to live in if you can be ataraxic about it.

  2. Getting caught up with you Ramana. I see your brother was up against the mobile shysters – all an act I do believe to keep you on eternum contracts.

And yes, not just in India, women’s rights are eroded everywhere, I see massive regression even in Canada.

  3. Why would commenting be anti-Muslim? Apparently Hindu fathers marry their daughters off early too. And the second article was presumably about a 17-year-old girl who got married willingly. The father was opposed.

    1. In India, anything that you critically write about when it is about Muslims, the seculars amongst us promptly call us anti Muslim. It certainly does not make me one.
