  1. I love it. So true isn’t it? We have lots of Scots settlers and immigrants here and though they don’t sound quite as thick, they are still incomprehensible. Is Glasgwegian English the most incomprehensible?

I’m going to bookmark those programs. Sigh. British tv. Why can’t we all …

      1. We say here that the Scots work real hard to preserve those accents, decade after decade of being Canadian , because it confuses us all so much. Also here, every teeny event is an excuse for a piper or the whole pipe band. Never mind the celebrated, deceased or installed was never a Scot, we are all: SCOTLAND.

  2. LOLOL! that was funny.
sometimes i have as much trouble here in America understanding some very deeply southern accents.
once in school in the state of Virginia my math teacher called on me asking what was
“paa awww squaawww?” i had to ask her to repeat the question three times.
she was not pleased or amused. and i didn’t have a CLUE what she was talking about.
another classmate finally answered. 3.14 PIE R SQUARE!!!
    and I KNEW THAT!!!! LOL!

  3. Good fun. I worked for several years with two scientists who were born and raised in Scotland. Both were easy to understand. But both said they had occasional problems understanding those of us who spoke “American English.”

    1. Would you like to emigrate to India? India has 22 official languages. According to Census of India, the total number of mother tongues spoken in India is 1652. However, only around 150 languages have a sizable speaking population. The Indian census of 1961 recognised 1,652 different languages in India (including languages not native to the subcontinent).

  4. I know people who speak quite normally, understandable as well, until the get into a conversation with someone (usually tourist) from their homeland/region – and everything for days on end makes absolutely no sense…even though apparently they are speaking English!

  5. Reminds me of a trip long ago to London with a Japanese manager from my time working in Japan. We went into a little shop for breakfast, and the shop keeper said something to me with a thick Scottish accent that I obviously didn’t understand. The Japanese manager teased me by asking me if he should translate for me!
