Persona.

This post is inspired by Nick’s post on Lingering Delusions. He asks some searching questions there and while some of it is in jest, it led me to some serious introspection too.

The problem in the delusion aspect is to identify quite which delusion or delusions that one should address!

According to Carl Jung The Persona is how we present ourselves to the world. The word “persona” is derived from a Latin word that literally means “mask.” It is not a literal mask, however. The persona represents all of the different social masks that we wear among different groups and situations. It acts as a mask to shield the ego from negative images. According to Jung, the persona may appear in dreams and take a number of different forms.

My late wife, used to tease me about my various personae She used to say that I was a different person altogether when I got dressed to go to work and came for breakfast. I was a different person when I changed into my home clothes in the evenings. Even my bearing and stride would be different.

It was much later, in retirement that I gave this observation the attention it deserved and discovered the fascinating world of introspection.

It is a fact that I am a different person when I am in the role of a parent to that of the person I am when I am playing son to my father, or the friendly neighbourhood grandfather to all the area’s children. I am a different person among my friends and different among the domestic help, and so on and so forth.

In the blog world, my responses to some of my readers are serious, to some, playful and so on.

The point is that there is no one single persona that can be introspected on to find all the delusions. So, “It acts as a mask to shield the ego from negative images” statement leads me to believe that if one does start the process of dis-covering the “me”, it can take a life time to list all the delusions.

Nick, does that make sense?
