Welcome to the Loose Bloggers’ Consortium, where every Friday, some of us post on the same topic. Today’s topic has been chosen by yours truly.
“It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. There is no fun in doing nothing when you have nothing to do. Wasting time is merely an occupation then, and a most exhausting one. Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen.”
-Jerome K. Jerome
“The only thing wrong with doing nothing is that you never know when you’re finished.” ~Author Unknown
“Life is a waste of time and time is a waste of life. So waste your time and have the time of your life.”
~ T-Shirt Quotation.
I am not an idle person. I suggested this topic when I was in a period of enforced idleness following my prolapsed cervical disc. There were four other occasions following major surgery that I had to undergo enforced idleness. These five occasions are experiences that I would not like to undergo again.
On all five occasions I tried to console myself with the thought that this too shall pass.
Pass they did but not in the way that I would have liked.
“Sitting silently, doing nothing, Spring comes and the grass grows by itself.”
~ Zen saying.
That is what I would like to do. But when that doing nothing is enforced, it is a different ball game altogether. Particularly when there is physical discomfort and mental stress arising out of prior commitments.
My Preceptor says however, that it is precisely at those times that one should sit silently and do nothing!
I am trying. I am trying.
“Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.”
~ Euripides
Am I calling my Preceptor foolish?
