Family Business.

By accident, I don’t usually watch movies on television, I watched Family Business, a 1989 movie with two favourite actors, Sean Connery and Dustin Hoffman. And, as a bonus, I discovered another good actor, Mathew Broderick. My daughter in love was watching the television on one of the pay and see channels, and I just happened to catch Sean Connery on the screen. I shelved going off inside to my room and stayed on to watch. I am glad that I did.

I can’t for the world, recollect how I missed seeing it when it was first released. With the two favourite actors like that, I would have normally gone for the fist show on the first day of release. Be that as it may, I was totally zapped seeing this film for the complex relationships that it portrays so ably.

I have known real life stories of grandson / grandfather relationships bypassing son / father relationships and I could immediately see the dynamics that the story and the director were trying to convey. I could also juxtapose to my own relationship with my uncle which annoyed my father no end and understand the equations.

I intend watching it again either on the TV or by getting a DVD.

My Favourite Movie Star.

di-nero

It is extremely difficult to choose one favourite star for me as I see movies in three languages. My earliest memories of movies revolve around those with Sivaji Ganesan in Tamil movies then followed English movies with Johny Weismuller as Tarzan and then to Hindi with Raj Kapoor as the star to admire.

And as I grew up into adulthood, so many kept coming in and going out that I never really developed the peculiar Indian trait of Hero worship and would see films for the overall effect rather than for the hero or heroine.

For this post however, I have chosen Robert De Niro for a number of reasons and I shall write them down as they occur to me.

The first movie that I saw with him was Godfather II and I was hooked. The last I saw of him was in The Intern. In between, I have seen a great many of them including those of his younger days like the The Taxi Driver, The Raging Bull etc mostly through DVDs or via cable TV. I cannot think of one where he let me down. Whether it was Romance, Action, or Comedy, he came up trumps every time.  His versatility and ability to adapt to his costars is outstanding, and that is why he is my favourite movie star.  Moreover, I would like to restrict my choice to English cinema and thus the choice of De Niro.

I know that I disappoint my regular reader blogger friend Tammy who would have preferred my choice being Sean Connery. Let me assure her that he would be my second choice!

Topic for today’s LBC post was suggested by me. You can read Shackman’s and Pravin’s takes at their respective blogs.

Grey Hair.

Grey hair is preferred by most men to no hair. And I leave those worthies who dye their hair to retain a youthful look out of this post.

And I think that a combination of grey hair and no hair beats everything in sight.

Tammy and I are biased.

This is my contribution to the Weekly Loose Bloggers’ Consortium (LBC) endeavour to post on one single topic every Friday. Today’s topic has been suggested by me.  I hope that you enjoyed reading my contribution.

To Keep Or Not To Keep II

bald:beard

The wait is over.  I have now carefully perused all the responses to the poll and have decided to bow to the wishes of everyone.

I shall keep the beard.  I don’t need to be a lumber sexual when I am compared to Sean Connery!

What finally nailed it is this comment:

“Appa you are the Sean Connery of our area, the Don of Kalyaninagar and my Santa…. Not Santa Singh but Santa Claus.

So to do justice to all those characters please keep the beard.

Hugs and kisses….. Yours truly… Naakaam Bahu.”

For some clarifications for those who do not know Hindi.  Kalyani Nagar is the name of the suburb where we live.  Santa Singh is the Indian equivalent of Murphy of Ireland, the butt of all jokes.  Naakaam translates to Useless and Bahu to Daughter In Law.

There Tammy, even the Bahu thinks that I am Sean Connery!
